Lt Surge - Kanto Gym Leaders #3

"It's time to kick ass or chew bubblegum. And I'm aaaall outta gum".

- Lt. Surge (No seriously, it was something that Lt. Surge said)

Well... jokes aside since Lt. Surge's Gym Leader title is "The Lightning American" and since he is an ex-military-man I decided that the most appropiate way to represent him was as this sort of bad-ass Schwarzenegger-ish, Commando-like, Rambo-ish idealized millitary hero from the 80's and early 90's american movies and maybe just a dash or two from a certain videogame icon from that same era (I mean if I'd have plastered a pair of sun glasses on his face it would have been way too obvious). Besides he talks about how his Electric-Type Pokémon saved his life during the "Great Pokémon War", which is another of the topics that a lot of Pokémon fans like to fantasize and theorize about. And so I tried to visualize him in this kind of war zone wrecking havoc with his Raichu and Electabuzz, where there's a Magnemite and a Magneton flying around. Where Lt Surge is even trowing Voltorbs around as if they were grenades, and even a little Pikachu who was around caught one of them and is roling it around while trying to escape from the chaos. And also I know that Lt. Surge has never had a Zapdos, but since I am including all startes in my pictures I also decided to include all three legendary birds. Besides, doesn't it looks great flying all big and mighty over the USA flag? I don't know I think it even looks kind of inspiring. Also you might notice a subtle reference to "that" certain puzzle you have to solve in order to reach him in the videogame. 

So anyway that's it for this war veteran. Next time we'll skip directly to Celadon Gym to accept the challenge of the Nature Loving Princess. Until next time!

Dado que el título de Líder de Gimnasio del Lt. Surge es "El Americano de Trueno" y dado que se trata de un ex-militar retirado, decidí que la manera más apropiada de representar a este entrenador era como esta clase de mezcla entre Schwarzenegger y Rambo, de los héroes de guerra predilectos de las películas americanas de los 80's y los 90's. Además, cuando lo conoces, te habla de cómo sus Pokémon de Tipo-Eléctrico salvaron su vida durante la "Gran Guerra de Los Pokémon", que es uno de los temas sobre el cual los fans adoran fantasear y teorizar. Y con eso en mente traté de visualizar al Lt. Surge en una especie de zona de guerra, causando destrozos con sus Pokémon Tipo-Eléctrico, Raichu y Electabuzz, con un Magnemite y un Magneton volando alrededor. Donde se pueden lanzar Voltorbs como si fueran granadas, y donde incluso hay un pequeño Pikachu, que agarró a uno de ellos y lo hace rodar mientras intenta escapar del caos de la escena. Y aunque sé que el Lt. Surge jamás ha tenido un Zapdos, así como quiero incluir a todos los starters en mis ilustraciones también quiero incluir a las tres aves legendarias. Además, ¿No les parece quever a Zapdos volando sobre la bandera Norteamericana es de lo más inspirador?. También los quejugaron el juego podrán notar una sutíl referencia al famoso "acertijo" que hay que resolver en el juego antes de poder enfrentarse al Lt. Surge.

En fin. Eso es todo para este veterano de guerra. La próxima vez, llegaremos a Celadon City (Ciudad Azulona, par los que se acuerdan del anime) para retar a la siguiente entrenadora de tipo planta en nuestra búsqueda por ser los mejores. ¡Hasta entonces!.
